Dubai's Self-Flying Helicopter Taxi Doesn't Need Roads Where It's Going

Would you hail an autonomous air taxi?

Dubai's latest hope to alleviate ground traffic is a flying copter that can transport two passengers for up to 30 minutes. The copter can reach speeds of 60 mph and doesn't require a pilot. The hover-taxi prototype recently had its first launch, without passengers.

It could be another five years before the taxi can ferry passengers for real, but there's already at least one other competitor aiming to be in the air. Looks like Dubai's race to own the skies is heating up.

The French town of Amiens paid tribute to World War I Australian soldiers ahead of Anzac Day on April 25, by lighting a main building in the village centre with archival images of Australian soldiers and poppies.

Amiens was the strategic hub of one of 1918’s most important conflicts – the Battle of Villers-Bretonneux, where on August 8, 1918, Australian soldiers prevented a German operation to capture Amiens.

On April 24, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and French Prime Minister Édouard Philippe officially opened the Sir John Monash Centre in Villers-Bretonneux, named after General John Monash, who commanded the August 8 offensive and was knighted for his efforts.

What We Know So Far About Toronto Van Attack Suspect

TORONTO—Alek Minassian, the suspect charged with the April 23 incident where a van plowed into pedestrians on a busy Toronto street, made a brief court appearance on Tuesday, April 24.

Dressed in a white jumpsuit, Minassian, 25, spoke only his name. He is charged with 10 counts of first-degree murder and 13 counts of attempted murder.

Minassian’s LinkedIn profile lists him as a student at Seneca College from 2011 to this year.

Details emerged on Tuesday from the Department of National Defence that he was briefly a member of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) last year.

“He did not complete his recruit training and requested to be voluntarily released from the CAF after 16 days of recruit training,” said Jessica Lamirande, a spokeswoman with the Department of National Defence.

Minassian had attended Thornlea Secondary School in Richmond Hill, graduating in 2011, according to school officials, who declined to provide further details.

A Facebook post reportedly by Minassian shortly before the attack makes reference to the 2014 Isla Vista tragedy in California, where a gunman killed six people and injured several more before turning the gun on himself. In a video before the attack, the gunman said his reason was due to rejection by women;

Alexander Alexandrovitch, who says on his Facebook profile that he attended the same high school as Minassian, describes the suspect as “mentally unstable.”

“He was known to meow like a cat and try to bite people,” he wrote on Facebook.

The area surrounding Minassian’s family home in Richmond Hill, Ont., was closed off with police tape a day after the incident.

Neighbours said they didn’t know the family well and that they usually kept to themselves. The family is thought to comprise four people, with another young male besides Minassian living in the household.

“We have a very quiet community, and nobody really bothers anybody else very much,” Wes Mack, a neighbour of the family, told The Epoch Times.

“It’s very tragic, very, very sad, and it’s hard on the community as well.”

Are you addicted to social media? Whether it's clinically an addiction or not, the social media habit can be very difficult to break. Gabe Zichermann and his team at Onward have made it their mission to help you restore what they call "tech/life balance."

Americans check their phones, on average, 115 times a day, Zichermann said. Meanwhile, most people can't predict "with any degree of certainty" how much they use their phones, he said.

Their app, Onward, tracks a person's activity on his/hers phone and provides the user with reports as well as some options to regulate excessive use, including blocking selected websites and apps.

The app charges $15 a month. The company said it has no plans to sell or share users’ personal information right now, CBS reported.

Stunning Video Shows Cosmic 'Snow' On Comet 67P

A GIF using images captured by the European Space Agency’s Rosetta probe shows what appears to be heavy snow falling on Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko.

The pictures were captured on June 1, 2016, but only released in March. The sequence of images was compiled into a GIF by Twitter user landru79 and posted on Monday, April 23.

What appears to be snow could be dust particles and/or high energy particles hitting the camera sensor, Gizmodo reported. Many of the spots are also stars in the background.

Rosetta was launched in 2004 and reached the comet in 2014. On Sept. 30, 2016, it crashed into the comet's surface, providing close ups of the cosmic object.

VERNE TROYER DEATH SUICIDAL WITH 3 TIMES LEGAL LIMIT OF ALCOHOL

Verne Troyer had three times the legal limit of alcohol in his system earlier this month.

The actor was taken to the hospital after a 911 call alerted police officers that he was suicidal.

A new report said that Troyer himself told the dispatcher he was suicidal.

The “Austin Powers” actor also told someone at the hospital he was suicidal.

He was treated for weeks but died on April 21.

[Spokesperson, Los Angeles County Coroner's Office]

“Verne Troyer was admitted into the hospital with a high level of alcohol in his system, where he passed out and became unconscious and he passed away.”

An official cause of death is still being investigated through toxicology tests.

A spokesperson for the actor said Troyer was struggling with depression and suicidal thoughts.

[Spokesperson, Verne Troyer]

“Verne was a fighter when it came to his own battles. Over the years he’s struggled and won, struggled and won, struggled and fought some more, but unfortunately, this time was too much.
Depression and Suicide are very serious issues. You never know what kind of battle someone is going through inside. Be kind to one another.
And always know, it’s never too late to reach out to someone for help.”
